Our Flickr Group

We've created our own Sego Lily Children's Garden group on Flickr.

This is ideal for several reasons.

1. Any of us can upload and add photos to the group from home.

2. No one outside our school community can view the photos.

3. You can download the photos from Flickr to your computer and print your favorites.

4. By using tags, you can quickly view just the photos with your child.

To access the photos, you need to receive an email invite to the group. Once you've accepted the invite and set up an account, you can refer back to this link to view our group's photos at any time.

When downloading images to print, you'll want to choose the original file size or the largest file possible. There's a wide range of print quality as some of our images are from iPhone cameras as well as SLRs.

Below is a tutorial on how to add photos to our group, but overall the site is very intuitive. For a general introduction to Flickr, you can take the official tour or read about some of its best features from Flickr user, Katie Nelson. Please feel free to email Deirdre at info@segolily.info if you have any questions or need any help.

How to add your personal photos to our Flickr group:

1. Log-in at www.flickr.com and click UPLOAD from the top menu as seen in image 1 below.

2. On the next screen, click on "Choose photos & video". A new small screen will pop up (see image 2) for you to locate the files on your own computer that you want to upload.

3. Open the file where your photos are and select the photos you want to upload to Flickr. On a PC, hold down CTRL to select more than one at a time...on a Mac, hold down the Command Key and then each individual file you click will be highlighted. If you want to select ALL the photos in the file, click Command+A.
Before you click "Upload Photos", be sure you have selected "Private" instead of Public, and check yes to Friends so that only people you select can view the photos. (Image 3).

4. Now Flickr will upload the photos, showing you its progress on a colored bar. Be sure not to close the screen while its uploading. This can take a long time as they are not compressing the files, which will allow us to print high quality photos from the large files.

Once photos have been successfully uploaded, a new page will pop up with all the photos and "Describe this upload" as the title. If you are using Flickr for more than just Sego Lily photos, it will be useful to create a set for your photos. ***This is also your chance to quickly tag each photo with the names of those in the photo, rather than after they're in the group (where you can only tag one photo at a time and it will take an excruciating amount of time!).

5. To add your photos to our Sego Lily group, so all parents can view them, click on Groups from the top menu (on the same line as Upload). Then click on our Sego Lily Children's Garden group.

6. Click on "Add Photos" (as seen in Image 5) on the group page.

7. You can select up to six photos at a time to add to the group (see image 6). If you start using Flickr for personal photos as well, it helps to choose a specific set from the drop-down menu that has "All your items" as a default (you probably won't need to change that this time). Click on six photos and then click on Add to Group.

8. Click on OK when a message pops up letting you know all members of the Sego Lily group will be able to view these photos.

9. Then you'll be taken back to the group page, only you should now see your photos among the photo stream with my photos. Now repeat steps 6-9 until all your photos are added to the group.

Phew! That's it. It's really much simpler to do than to describe!
